| Learning to Fly | |
The Australian Aviation Transport Security Act, came into effect March 10 2005, mandating increased security arrangements at 181 capital city, regional and other airports listed below.
The Act also requires all powered aircraft to be secured (ie. reasonable measures taken to deter theft) when unattended at any aerodrome. RA-Aus registered aircraft are included in the category of aircraft required to be secured from theft. The locking device only needs to be fitted when the aircraft is assembled and ready for flight, and the operator (or 'trusted custodian') is not in a position to intervene in the event of unlawful interference or to report such interference.
Further information is available on the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government website.
The Act extended the ASIC system, which has existed at major airports for some years, to encompass all persons, including RA-Aus pilots, who need access to the secure parts [i.e. the 'airside'] of all the aerodromes listed below. The RA-Aus staff will process ASIC applications for those RA-Aus members needing an ASIC. This requires identity verification by RA-Aus authorised personnel, a security assessment and criminal records check and possibly a citizenship check by the Department of Immigration all handled by the AusCheck section of the Federal Attorney-General's Department; so each application takes some time to process before RA-Aus is able to have the photographic ASIC manufactured and issued to the member. The RA-Aus fee for this service is $160, which includes the service charges from the Federal Attorney-General's AusCheck and the card manufacturer; the service is for RA-Aus members only.
If you need an Australian Aviation Security Identification Card or more information download the current application material — Adobe PDF format. Only the current ASIC application form is acceptable to AusCheck, previous versions will be rejected and sent back to the applicant. The application form requires you to acknowledge that you have been given a copy of the AusCheck Privacy Notice, which explains how AusCheck will use your personal information, so you should also download the privacy policy statement part 1 and part 2 [PDF formats].
Pilots needing access to the secure areas of the following airports are required to display an ASIC when in those areas. Those 28 airports appearing in bold italic had security restricted areas established before 10 March 2005.
